My Friends
My support network...
In addition to my family and friends who I’ve mentioned, I also have the love and support of a wonderful group of women who were my mother’s dearest friends.  Still, over a year after my mother’s death, I am in touch with them.  A few were close friends of my mother’s for over 50 years, and live nearby.  A couple of these women grew up with my mother in Hungary and now live near me in New York City.

These women still call to check in on me, and will always be a part of my life.  Now, they are all excited about my adopting.  My child will have an extra five grandmothers doting on him/her!

I am lucky to have the most wonderful friends I could ask for.  Many of my friendships span back to childhood, and others I developed later.  There is nothing that my friends and I won’t do for one another.  I consider them to be family, and they will certainly be there as family for my child.

My longest friendship started when I was in diapers.  Florence and I grew up in the same building. We are both only children and spent so much time together that we grew to think of one another more like sisters than friends.  We’ve been there for each other through thick and thin.  She is the most patient and caring person I know.  Not only does she teach special education in the New York City public school system, but she also takes care of her 86-year-old mother like no other daughter can.  My child will be fortunate to have such a devoted “aunt.”

Celebrating with my girlfriends!
I have a number of other long-term friendships that span since childhood, and a few very close friends from high school and college.  And, I’ve been lucky enough to meet some wonderful people through work who have become an important part of my life.

Some of my friends have children – ranging from age 1 to 12.  Others, like me, are single with no children, and they look forward to being “aunts” and “uncles” to my child.  I keep in contact with my friends’ children when I can (some live in New York City, and others nearby in New Jersey). When I can’t see them, I enjoy speaking with my friends’ children on the phone and hearing all about their special moments and how they are all progressing.  I can’t wait to share stories of my own child with my friends!
